DIVORCE FINANCE BOOKS - 7 RECOMMENDATIONS

Although there is no substitute for having a team of top-notch professionals to help you navigate the gauntlet of divorce, not every woman can afford to hire one. And even if you can, you should still arm yourself with as much knowledge and information as possible.

The books below focus primarily on the financial aspects of divorce and should help give you a fairly good overview. Since my firm, Bedrock Divorce Advisors, exclusively works with women who are going through a financially complicated divorce, I chose to review those books that were more women-focused. Please note that these books have been written for a national audience. Since divorce laws differ significantly from state to state, I highly recommend that you get competent advice on the laws that apply specifically to your state and your individual situation.

This book offers plenty of financial information –in fact, it may offer too much information! There are 20 chapters covering all sorts of important topics, ranging from how to compute your net worth to whether you should keep or sell the house. Some chapters even delve into more complicated financial areas, such as retirement plans, stock options and deferred compensation plans. My concern is that most people will find all this information too confusing and overwhelming, especially if they are entrenched in the emotional trauma of divorce. Nevertheless, I really like Woodhouse’s first two chapters, in which she masterfully explains the real-life differences between the legal and financial aspects of divorce. These two chapters alone are worth the price of this book.
